Phonetic variability as a static/dynamic process in speech communication: a cross linguistic study

چکیده

متن کاملRepresentational Maps from the Speech Signal to Phonological Categories: a Case Study with Lexical Tones
As the initial step in studying the acquisition of phonological categories from the speech signal, we describe representational issues for the target of learning, a probabilistic distribution of phonological categories over a phonetic parameter space. Our model system of study is cross-linguistic lexical tonal phonemes in tonal languages. We focus on two representational issues: temporal resolu...
متن کاملA dynamic, feature-based approach to the interface between phonology and phonetics for speech modeling and recognition
An overview of a statistical paradigm for speech recognition is given where phonetic and phonological knowledge sources, drawn from the current understanding of the global characteristics of human speech communication, are seamlessly integrated into the structure of a stochastic model of speech. A consistent statistical formalism is presented in which the submodels for the discrete, feature-bas...
متن کامل1. Phonetic and linguistic markers in speech
Many disciplines are professionally interested in the analysis of markers of identity in speech, and in the nature of the listener's performance in attributing particular characteristics to the speaker on the basis of such markers. A necessary prerequisite for the development of research in this area, from the standpoint of any discipline, is the provision of an adequate phonetic and linguistic...
